Soaring to new heights: more Australians visited Austria than ever before

Australians continued to show their love for the Alpine nation in 2024 and surpassed the records set just a year earlier.

Australians visited Austria in 2024 in record numbers once again.
According to the annual figures released by Statistik Austria, Australians accounted for 159,000 arrivals and 425,000 overnight stays during the calendar year 2024 – surpassing the previous records set in 2023 by 3.8% for arrivals and 2.2% for overnights. December was by far the most popular time to visit Austria, with the 79,000 Australian overnights recorded in one month, the best monthly result ever.

Lilly Freudmayer, Market Representative for Australia, shares the wonderful results: ‘We have seen amazing growth across the country, not just in the cultural hubs of Vienna and Salzburg, but also the regions, namely SalzburgerLand and Tirol, with one of the biggest increases in the southern destination Graz (an increase of 30% in overnights compared to 2023) and the Tirolean capital Innsbruck (20% increase in overnights compared to 2023). We are delighted that Australians are staying longer and discovering the diversity of Austrian tourism offerings, exploring our breathtaking landscapes, joining local activities and festivities, and enjoying culinary delights.’

2025 is set to be another big year for Austria, with both the 200th birthday of waltz king Johann Strauss and the 60th anniversary of the blockbuster movie The Sound of Music attracting music lovers to Vienna and Salzburg respectively. Foodies will love the return of the Guide Michelin to Austria, with 82 Michelin restaurants, 33 Green Michelin Stars and 43 Bib Gourmand Restaurants they will be spoiled for choice.  ‘The jam-packed anniversary programs offer an amazing variety of events to appeal to most visitors. With the introduction of Scoot services to Vienna in June, travellers will benefit from more flight options and affordable airfares – leaving more budget for Michelin fine dining or schnitzel with noodles and crisp apple strudel.’
