Australians Climbed Every Mountain in Austria in 2025
Record arrivals and overnights from visitors down under in the Heart of Europe

16 Mar 2026

Australians continued to show their love for the Alpine nation in 2025 and set a record, for the third year in row.

According to the annual figures released by Statistik Austria, Australians accounted for 185,000 arrivals and 504,000 overnights in Austria in 2025, cracking the magic half-a-million-mark for overnights for the first time and surpassing the previous records only set in 2024 by a whopping 16.5% for arrivals and 18.6% for overnights. December continues to be the favourite month, with more than 90,000 Australians overnights recorded, the best monthly result ever, followed by January with 75,000 overnights. During the summer season, June, July and September are the preferred months with nearly 50,000 overnights recorded in each month.

Vienna saw an increase of 24% of Australian overnights compared to 2024, Salzburg City and SalzburgerLand 16% and the Tirol 15%. Nearly all major destinations recorded new all-time records of Australian visitations. Vorarlberg, home to the exclusive ski resorts Lech and Zürs am Arlberg saw an increase of 28% of Australian overnights compared to the previous year.

Lilly Freudmayer, Market Representative for Australia, is delighted about the wonderful results: ‘We continue to see amazing growth across the country, not just in the cultural hubs of Vienna and Salzburg, but also the regions, namely Vorarlberg, Tirol and SalzburgerLand. The celebrations of the 200th Strauss anniversary in Vienna and the 60th Sound of Music anniversary in Salzburg would have no doubt contributed to the positive results. It is also wonderful to see that some lesser-known regions are starting to emerge as trendy destinations. The provincial capital of Graz, dubbed the culinary capital of Austria and gateway to the Styrian wine country, has recorded an increase of 37% in Australian overnights over the last two years.’

A big drawcard in 2026 will be Eurovision, which will be hosted in Vienna from 10th to 16th May. After JJ’s win in 2025 Austria has won the right to host the 70th anniversary celebration of Eurovision, the third time this honour has been bestowed upon the Capital of Music. Thousands of fans from all over the world are expected to join the colourful events and celebrations, with a strong contingent of Australian Eurovision fans expected to partake. Vienna will present itself as an open-minded and welcoming host, with everyone welcome and ‘United by Music’, the slogan for 2026.
