Austria is Switching to the Digital Vignette
Adhesive vignettes will be phased out at the end of the 2026 vignette year

5 okt 2026

Everything you need to know about the digital vignette - important dates and where to get the new toll.

Austria is switching its tried-and-tested toll system to the digital vignette. The adhesive vignette will be phased out at the end of the 2026 vignette year; from 1 February 2027, only the digital vignette will be valid. For visitors, this will make toll payment even easier: no sticking, no scraping, full transparency – and flexible time options for weekend trips, skiing holidays or longer stays.

High uptake and extensive distribution

  • Already today, more than 75 per cent of all annual vignettes are digital.

  • Easy availability: 24/7 in the ASFINAG toll shop; plus around 4,000 sales outlets across Austria and approximately 100 vending machines at 30 locations.

  • Available ‘offline’: Those without online access can still conveniently purchase the digital vignette at tobacconists, toll booths and petrol stations, as well as from ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, ADAC and other sales partners.

  • Valid immediately: Digital vignettes purchased from vending machines and at sales outlets can be used straight away. Please note: For digital annual vignettes purchased via the toll shop, the statutory 18-day period before they become valid still applies.

“Through a comprehensive distribution system, an online toll shop, vending machines and extensive information campaigns, we are ensuring that everyone will be able to purchase the digital version in good time from 2027 onwards. To this end, we are, amongst other things, further expanding the network of our distribution partners who offer the digital vignette for sale,” confirms ASFINAG board member Herbert Kasser. Sales at our tried-and-tested sales outlets will also continue as before – this ensures that customers can conveniently decide for themselves how they wish to obtain their digital vignette.

“The adhesive vignette has been in use for 30 years, and since 2017 our customers have been enjoying the benefits of the digital vignette. The dual system will come to an end with the 2026 vignette year – from 1 February 2027, only digital versions will be available in Austria. With ‘Digital Vignette only’, we are taking the next step towards a modern, customer-focused toll system,” says ASFINAG Managing Director Jacqueline Erhart. “The vignette with four time-based options will remain – it continues to cater for the needs of the tourism sector.”

Services for travellers: How to get your digital vignette with ease

  • Plan ahead: It’s best to get your digital vignette before you set off – ideally as part of your holiday planning.

  • Convenient purchase: Available from the ASFINAG toll shop, at 4,000 sales partners, at around 100 vending machines, or ‘the old-fashioned way’ at tobacconists, toll booths, petrol stations, and ÖAMTC/ARBÖ.

  • Set off straight away: Vignettes purchased from vending machines and sales outlets are valid immediately. Please note the 18-day processing period for digital annual vignettes purchased via the toll shop.

  • Stay flexible: Four time options (including for short trips, week-long holidays and the season) ensure tailor-made cover – right from the very first kilometre.

For visitors from neighbouring and source markets, the switch brings convenience above all else: the digital vignette is straightforward, available in multiple languages and can be quickly updated if the vehicle registration number changes. Austria thus joins the ranks of modern and sustainable toll systems – as it is already the case in Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Until the transition is complete, ASFINAG is continuing to expand its digital sales offering and is supporting the process with a comprehensive information campaign both at home and abroad. The aim is to enable all travellers to enjoy a simple, safe and predictable start to their holidays.
