New Biking Trails & Parks in Austria

24. mar. 2026

This summer again brings plenty of cycling news from across Austria the first barrier-free mountain bike trail in Styria and a cross-border mountain bike tours in Paznaun-Ischgl.

Biking has become an incredibly varied yet highly specialised topic. Austria offers routes and trails to match the many different types of bike – from trekking bikes to gravel bikes and from road bikes to mountain bikes – powered under your own steam or with environmentally friendly energy to assist. Downhill biking has seen a surge in popularity and many towns and regions are expanding their bike parks or creating new trails. Long-distance cycle paths and multi-stage mountain bike tours are also in high demand.

Please find some highlights of our cycling news below.

Burgenland: Cross-border National Park Cycle Path

Mid-May 2026 will see the launch of the first section of the National Park Cycle Path NP1. The 150 km circuit connects the Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park with the Hungarian Fertő-Hanság National Park, past vast salt pans, open steppes, vineyards and reed landscapes. Grazing white donkeys, herds of grey cattle and a variety of birds can be spotted along the way. The new cycle path is suitable for traditional bikes, gravel bikes or e-bikes. With plenty of shortcut options and connections to five train stations, the NP1 can be explored as a multi-day tour or in individual stages. In autumn 2026, the Hungarian section will be extended by another 50 km through almost untouched nature to Kapuvár.

SalzburgerLand: Hohe Tauern Bike Trail

From summer 2026, visitors will be able to explore the countless natural features of the Hohe Tauern National Park region by mountain bike or gravel bike. The new 530 km Hohe Tauern Bike Trail starts in Großarltal (in the east of the national park), runs right through the national park region and ends at its western boundary by the Krimml Waterfalls. It leads bikers through 14 valleys and 12,000 m of altitude difference, rewarding them with spectacular views of the Hohe Tauern National Park’s snow-capped peaks  – from the Hoher Sonnblick to the Großglockner, Kitzsteinhorn and Großvenediger.

SalzburgerLand: Meridiem Trail

From April 2026, the new long-distance Meridiem Trail will be signposted and ready to ride! It covers 582 km from Vienna via Eisenstadt to Graz, Klagenfurt and Villach, from where you can continue on to Grado in Italy. The trail picks up on the magical ancient Roman number of 12, divided into 12 stages that lead "ad meridiem" towards 12 o'clock, where the sun is at its highest. Starting in the former Vindobona in Vienna, the route passes through various ancient Roman towns and settlements all the way to Villach, the former Roman Santicum. The 12th stage takes cyclists to Grado or Aquileia, as the once important port city on the Adriatic was called in Roman times. A number of train stations make it easy to choose individual start and end points along the way.

Tirol: Flitz Family Trail Wald

Following a trial phase in October 2025, the Flitz Family Trail Wald in the Imst outdoor region will launch its first summer season in March 2026. It consists of two easy-to-ride trails that are ideal for beginners. The trails are 500 and 640 m long. There is also the Trail Wald Playground, where kids can embark on a hunt around the legend of the mysterious Gafleiner.
