Gig Tripping: 6 Must-Know Festivals in Austria
From rock to brass music and electronic

10 Apr 2026

Turn up the volume! These summer music festivals in Austria are well worth taking a trip for.

Eurovision is just the beginning, but the music doesn’t stop here. Throughout the summer, festivals, concert series, and performances - from pop and rock to classical music - draw visitors from all over to Austria. “Gig tripping” (also known as the “Swiftie effect”) is especially popular among young travelers. According to international studies, around 60 to 70% travel to concerts outside their hometowns, and more than 40% combine events with visits to new places. This trend aligns perfectly with Austria’s greatest strength: as a year-round destination, Austria offers guests exceptional music experiences 365 days a year.

Here are six unmissable music festivals that make a summer trip to Austria worthwhile:

  1. Nova Rock Festival (11-14 June, Nickelsdorf, Burgenland)
The Nova Rock Festival is one of Europe’s largest rock festivals and takes place just an hour from Vienna. This year’s headliners include Iron Maiden, The Cure, The Offspring, Bring Me The Horizon, Volbeat, and Papa Roach.

  2. Wetterleuchten (18-19 June, Innsbruck, Tirol)
The Wetterleuchten Festival has been held on the Nordkette since 2001 and is considered the highest-altitude festival in Europe. For two days, up to 1,100 electronic music fans gather to relax, dance, and camp, enjoying performances by both international and local DJs and bands. The festival goes on rain or shine, so warm clothing is recommended.

  3. Woodstock off Brass Music (2-5 July, Innviertel region, Upper Austria)
“Woodstock” promises all the excitement of a rock festival - only here, brass music takes centre stage, combined with summer vibes, camping, and a celebration of music and life. With reggae, funk, ska, and jazz, the brass shines across multiple stages. More than 100 ensembles from all continents make the “Woodstock of Brass Music” in the Innviertel the largest of its kind worldwide.

  4. Danube Island Festival (3-5 July, Vienna)
16 stage, more than 200 music acts, 700 hours of music and up to 3 million festival-goers: The Danube Festival on Vienna’s Danube Island, catering to fans of all music genres, is Europe’s largest free open air festival.

  5. Bregenz Festival (22 July – 23 August, Bregenz, Vorarlberg)
The Bregenz Festival is one of Europe’s best-known annual cultural events, taking place in Bregenz on Lake Constance. At its heart is the Seebühne - a floating open-air stage where grand opera productions are performed right on the water. In 2026, Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” will take centre stage against the stunning backdrop of the lake and the Alps.

  6. Picture On Festival (7-8 August, Bildein, Burgenland)
The Picture On Festival in Bildein in Austria’s easternmost province Burgenland is one of the country’s smallest festivals. Organised almost entirely by the local community of this 350-resident village, it welcomes around 3,000 visitors during the festival days. The village itself becomes part of the experience: the stage is right in the town centre, and a traditional wine tavern (Heuriger) sits next to the campsite. Musically, the festival spans indie, ska, reggae, and electronic, featuring both international acts and regional artists.
