Queer in Austria:
A guide for LGBTQIA+ travellers

26. velj 2026.

The Vienna Pride turns 30 and Vienna hosts the Eurovision Song Contest in 2026: Just two of many reasons to spend a queer holiday in Austria.

2026 marks a significant milestone for the queer community in Austria: Not only does Vienna host the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in May, which traditionally attracts a large queer fanbase, Austria’s most important annual LGBTQIA+ event, the Vienna Pride, celebrates its 30th anniversary just a couple of weeks later.

But it’s not just about big milestone events. Austria is a welcoming destination for queer travellers year-round, combining a strong commitment to equality with a vibrant community scene. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Austria since 2019, anti-discrimination protections are in place, and the cities – especially Vienna, Graz, and Salzburg – have visible LGBTQIA+ communities, inclusive cafes, nightlife, and cultural experiences. Austria is relaxed and safe, making it easy for queer travellers to feel comfortable when exploring.

The 30th Vienna Pride and other Pride events

Austria’s flagship Pride, the Vienna Pride, takes place from 29 May to 14 June 2026, and celebrates three decades of activism, diversity, and community in the heart of Vienna. The highlight is the parade on the Ringstrasse boulevard (13 June), which attracts more than 300,000 queers and alleys every year. Side events include the Vienna Pride Community Fest in the Prater on 30 May (with live music, food trucks, a kids’ area and a Pride Run) and numerous parties and celebrations at LGBTQIA+ spots throughout town.

Vienna, of course, isn’t the only Austrian city celebrating Pride: Graz (27 Juni), Linz (27 June), and Innsbruck (26 July) all have their own Pride Parades, while Salzburg hosts an annual Pride Festival (TBC, August/September).

Clubs, bars, and cafes: LGBTQIA+ hotspots all year round

Queer events and spaces are, of course, not limited to Pride month. Some of the most popular LGBTQ+ hang outs in Vienna include Villa Vida (a café and restaurant hosting events such as queer speed dating and drag queen brunch), Café Savoy (for cake and coffee in a history-filled setting), and Motto am Fluss (a stylish restaurant on a boat on the Danube). Want to sip Aperol spritz and dance the night away? Head to Village Bar, Mango Bar, Why Not or Ken Club (dance events at changing locations). Pinked Vienna have made themselves a name with their girls-only clubbings.

In Salzburg, HOSI Bar, Mexxx Gay Bar, or Dark Eagle (men only) are institutions in the community, while Stars Bar Café and The FAGtory Club in Graz and forty nine and Ohne Zwang (daytime bar) in Linz are all queer bars, cafes, and clubbing locations where travellers can dive straight into the LGBTQIA+ scene.

Queer-friendly hotels in Austria

No holiday would be complete without the right accommodation where guests will feel straight at home. While all Austrian hotels welcome the LGBTQIA+ community, some are known to be especially queer friendly. Vienna’s Hotel Motto is an elegant, uncompromising haven with a Parisian flair right in the heart of the city, while Hotel Sans Souci makes a stylish urban retreat amidst Vienna’s artistic centre. Looking for a smaller hideaway? Hotel-Pension Wild has made itself a name as a cosy queer hideaway in the capital for decades.

Trip to the countryside? Hotel Nesslerhof in Salzburg’s Grossarl Valley is a queer-friendly sports and wellness hotel with a large adults-only spa (featuring many treatment options), a natural swimming pond, and a stylish restaurant serving Austrian. Hotel Pirchner in Reith in Alpbachtal another popular option, offering 4-star amenities, wellness, and daily activities from yoga and meditation to guided hikes, bike tours and skiing. Holidays at the lake? Fischer am See is a gay-friendly hotel near Reutte, Tirol, close to the German border, with a spa on-site and hiking and cross-country skiing trails right at your doorstep.

Austria’s first queer mountain hut

Austria’s first queer mountain hut Absteige zur bärtigen Therese (“The bearded Therese) is located on Styria’s beautiful Koralm 1,000 m above sea level and is open from May to the end of October, before starting into the winter season in December. Guests can choose from ten artsy rooms and enjoy Austrian cuisine at their in-house restaurant as well as an exquisite range of wines. They host tons of events ranging from queer brunches and BBQs to drag nights, talks and balls, along with long weekends for men or women only.
